Musk Has No Need for Tencent's Path

Tencent spent eight years after 3Q learning how to be a holding company. Musk is spending 2026 proving he learned the opposite lesson. The Tencent essay from a few years ago made a sharp observation: China's internet champion became a "投资公司" — an investment company — after its brush with extinction in 2010. It outsourced innovation. It shipped its流量 to京东 and 58同城. It stopped building and started buying. The author warned that a company without a product信仰 could only optimize for ROI, not for the future. Musk appears to have read that piece too. Or maybe he just understood instinctively what Tencent got wrong. Here is what SpaceX and Tesla are not doing: they are not selling off their core businesses to partners. They are not retreating to "we only do what we're best at." They are not opening their API and hoping the ecosystem builds something. They are doing the exact opposite. They are stitching together a vertical stack for the AI age that has no precedent in business history. Consider the pieces Musk is assembling: Tesla's vehicle fleet generates real-world training data for autonomous driving — billions of miles of edge cases, human behavior patterns, sensor readings. SpaceX's launch capacity means he can deploy satellite infrastructure that no competitor can match in speed or cost. Starlink's 10 million subscribers and 150+ countries give him distribution infrastructure that can reach 3.1 billion people. xAI's Grok models give him the AI layer. And now SpaceX's plan for orbital data centers gives him the compute infrastructure that no terrestrial operator can match — radiation-hardened, solar-powered, with zero terrestrial land costs. Each piece feeds the others. The data from Tesla's fleet trains xAI's models. The models run on compute deployed by SpaceX launches. The compute is powered by Starlink connectivity in places where terrestrial infrastructure doesn't exist. The revenue from 10 million Starlink subscribers funds the next generation of Starship, which deploys the next generation of satellites, which improves the connectivity, which attracts more subscribers.
